SOCKE MILITARY

 The Soke Military Society was formed in about 1968 when it was known as the Soke Military Collectors Society. In the early day's there were several members from the Frank Perkins engineering company which resulted in meetings being held in the AUEW union building on Lincoln road, Peterborough.

The venue changed to The Still in Cumbergate, Peterborough before moving in around 1980 to its present meeting location at the city museum and Art Gallery. The name of the society changed in about 1990 when the society dropped the Collectors from its title as it was apparent that there were many members who were not collectors but interested in military history and therefore the current title was felt to be more inclusive. Membership has fluctuated over the years, peaking in about 1988 with in excess of 100 members.The membership currently standing at about 60. A new membership drive is currently being undertaken by the membership secretary.

La Soke Military Society fut créée vers 1968. Elle s'appelait alors la Soke Military Collectors Society. Dans ses débuts, elle était constituée de plusieurs membres de la Frank Perkins Engineering Company, dont les réunions se tenaient dans l'immeuble de l'AUEW Union, rue Lincoln à Peterborough. Le siège changea pour The Still, Cumbergate à Peterborough, avant de s'établir dans les années 80 dans son local actuel au City Museum and Art Gallery. Le nom de l'association fut modifié dans les années 90 avec la suppression du terme "Collectors", un grand nombre de ses membres n'étant pas collectionneurs mais simplement passionnés d'histoire militaire ; par conséquent, la dénomination courante devint moins restrictive. Le nombre d'adhésion a fluctué d'une année sur l'autre, atteignant un maximum en 1988 avec 100 nouveaux membres. Le nombre moyen d'adhésion s'établit à environ 60 par an. Chaque nouvelle adhésion est à présent prise en charge par le secrétariat.
